In New Orleans, Mardi Gras is famous for parades and food. A favorite treat is the king cake, a colorful cake with sugar. A tiny plastic baby is hidden inside. Along with the king cake, people enjoy jambalaya, gumbo, and beignets—deep-fried doughnuts with powdered sugar.

In Brazil, Carnival ends on Fat Tuesday. The day is filled with parades, dancing, and food. The main dish is feijoada, a black bean stew with pork. It’s served with rice, collard greens, and orange slices. People also eat pão de queijo (cheese bread), pastéis (fried pastries), and churros. The celebrations last late into the night with samba and street parties.

In Italy, Carnevale is celebrated before Lent. The best-known celebration is in Venice. People enjoy sweet treats like frittelle, fried dough balls filled with cream or raisins. In Tuscany, cenci (crispy fried dough with sugar) is popular. These sweet foods are eaten before the fasting season begins.

Some people hide a coin in the crêpe, and whoever finds it is said to be lucky. Crêpes are also a big part of La Chandeleur (Candlemas), which happens before Mardi Gras.

In Germany, the celebration is called Fastnacht or Karneval. People eat krapfen, round doughnuts filled with jam or custard. These treats are served at parades and eaten in costumes. Some krapfen are deep-fried and dusted with powdered sugar. Sausages, pretzels, and stews are also eaten.

In Spain, Mardi Gras is celebrated with many special foods. In Andalusia, people eat tortillas de camarones, crispy shrimp fritters. In Valencia, people eat Banuelos, fried dough balls with pumpkin. The most famous treat is churros, fried dough sticks served with thick hot chocolate
